Tennessee prohibits hairstyle discrimination

Tennessee has enacted legislation that expressly prohibits employers from discriminating against individuals because of their hairstyle or other traits associated with race. Senate Bill 136 took effect on July 1, 2022.

Tennessee extends time to file a discrimination claim

This notice is to inform you thatTennessee has enacted a legislation (Senate Bill 2774) that increases the time in which an individual may file a discrimination complaint against their employer from 180 to 185 days. Senate Bill 2774 is effective immediately.

Tennessee Amends E-Verify Act

The Tennessee Lawful Employment Law Act (E-Verify Act) was recently amended in an effort to minimize the compliance burden on small businesses and strengthen the authority of the Tennessee Department of Labor (TDOL) to pursue violators.  Effective January 1, 2017, private employers with at least 50 employees are required to enroll in the E-Verify program and use the system to verify employment eligibility for newly hired workers.  In addition, the amendment authorizes the TDOL to pursue employers that knowingly violate the E-Verify Act.
