Background:

Cincinnati's nondiscrimination law protects applicants and employees on the basis of race, gender, age, color, religion, disability status, marital status, sexual orientation, transgender status, and ethnic, national, or Appalachian regional origin.

Ordinance 379:

Ordinance 379 amends the City's protections on race to include natural hair types and natural hairstyles historically associated with race. This includes, but isn't limited to, hairstyle, texture, type, hair treatments, or hairstyles such as natural hair, afros, braids, cornrows, locks, and twists.

Compliance Recommendations:

Cincinnati employers should ensure compliance with the ordinance and review dress codes, appearance policies, and training to avoid restrictions on hairstyles historically associated with race. Please contact your dedicated service professional with any questions.
