Virginia has enacted legislation (House Bill 5), which significantly expands the state's existing paid sick leave law, which has covered only certain home health workers since 2021. The new law takes effect beginning July 1, 2027.

Supreme Court Allows DHS to Proceed with TPS Terminations for Haiti and Syria

On June 26, 2026, the U.S. Supreme Court lifted an injunction from a lower court that prevented the U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) from terminating TPS for Haiti and Syria.   The decision does not immediately terminate TPS-based employment authorization, invalidate existing employment authorization documents or create new Form I-9 reverification deadlines. Employers should await further government guidance before taking any employment-related action.

On May 1, 2026 a U.S. District Court blocked the termination of TPS for Yemen. Yemeni TPS holders remain authorized to work while the lawsuit continues.

Treasury Publishes Final Rules Listing Occupations that Qualify for No Tax on Tips Deduction and Provides Additional Guidance on Qualified Tips

The U.S. Department of the Treasury (Treasury) has finalized regulations  under the new “No Tax on Tips” deduction, identifying which occupations are eligible for the new deduction because they customarily and regularly received tips as of Dec. 31, 2024, and defining “qualified tips.”   The Listed Occupations include corresponding Treasury Tipped Occupation Codes (TTOCs) which employers must report on 2026 tax forms.  The tax regulations do not alter the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) wage and hour rules or tip credit eligibility.
