Montgomery County expands Ban the Box law

Montgomery County, Maryland has enacted legislation (Bill 35-20) that amends the county's law governing criminal history inquiries to cover more employers and establish greater restrictions. Bill 35-20 takes effect February 19, 2021.

Maryland harassment survey due July 1 reminder

Maryland employers with 50 or more employees must submit a sexual-harassment-disclosure survey electronically to the Maryland Commission on Civil Rights (MCCR) on or before July 1, 2020. Covered employers must complete the survey again on or before July 1, 2022. The requirements were part of Senate Bill 1010, which was enacted in 2018.

Maryland requires consent before using facial recognition during interviews

Maryland expands equal pay protections

Maryland has enacted legislation (House Bill 123 and House Bill 14) that requires employers to provide pay transparency to applicants, prohibits employers from seeking an applicant's pay history, and bars employers from taking adverse action against employees for inquiring about their own wages. Both laws take effect on Oct. 1, 2020.

Maryland amends mini-WARN law

Maryland has enacted legislation (Senate Bill 780) that amends the Economic Stabilization Act (also known as Mini-WARN) to require Maryland employers with at least 50 employees to provide 60 days' written notice before initiating a reduction in operations. Senate Bill 780 takes effect Oct. 1, 2020.
