New Year Brings Paid Sick Leave to Washington

Washington has joined the growing list of jurisdictions requiring employers to provide paid sick leave to employees. As of January 1, 2018, all Washington employers, regardless of size, must provide their employees paid sick and safe leave.

Washington Supreme Court Clarifies State Meal Break Requirements

The Washington Supreme Court holds that, when an employee demonstrates that he or she did not receive a timely meal break, the employer must either show that there was no violation or a valid waiver existed.  

New Accommodation Obligations for Washington Employers

With the passage of the Healthy Starts Act, Washington has expanded the rights of pregnant employees to receive reasonable accommodations in the workplace.

Our sick leave toolkit, which includes Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs) and model sick leave policies for jurisdictions with sick leave laws, has been updated to reflect the new Plainfield, NJ ordinance, effective July 2016, and updates to ordinances in New York City, New York and Seattle, Washington.

Seattle Labor Standards Ordinances Amended

The City of Seattle recently amended four labor standards ordinances:  Paid Sick and Safe Time, Fair Chance Employment, Minimum Wage, and Wage Theft.  The Labor Standard Ordinances are enforced by the Seattle Office of Labor Standards (OLS).
