New York prohibits pay history inquiries

The state of New York has enacted legislation (Senate Bill 6549) that will prohibit employers from asking about applicants’ pay history.  Senate Bill 6549 takes effect January 6, 2020.

New York expands equal pay requirements

The State of New York has enacted legislation (Assembly Bill 8093) that will expand the state’s equal pay requirements.  Assembly Bill 8093 takes effect October 8, 2019. 

New York bans hairstyle discrimination

The state of New York has enacted legislation (Assembly Bill 7797) that will expressly prohibit employers from discriminating against applicants and employees because of hair texture and hairstyles that are historically associated with race. Assembly Bill 7797 takes effect immediately. 

Westchester County adopts safe time law

Westchester County’s Safe Time Leave for Victims of Domestic Violence and Human Trafficking Law (“Safe Time Law”) provides eligible employees who are victims of domestic violence or human trafficking with up to 40 hours of paid leave in a calendar year to attend criminal and civil court proceedings and/or relocate to a safe location.

New York City bans most pre-employment testing for marijuana

New York City has enacted an ordinance (Int. No. 1445-A) that will generally prohibit employers from requiring a prospective employee to submit to drug testing for marijuana.
