Alaska eliminates minimum wage exception for workers with disabilities

Alaska has enacted Senate Bill 185 (SB 185) which eliminates the use of the subminimum wage for workers with disabilities.  SB 185 is effective Dec. 12, 2022.

California announces Jan. 1, 2023 minimum wage

The California Department of Finance has announced that the minimum wage will increase to $15.50 per hour for all employees effective Jan. 1, 2023.   

California - San Francisco amends family friendly workplace ordinance

San Francisco has amended the city’s Family Friendly Workplace Ordinance (FFWO), which applies to employers with 20 or more employees. The changes are effective July 12, 2022.

Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti on July 7, 2022, signed into law the Healthcare Workers Minimum Wage Ordinance (Ordinance).

California SB 1159 quarterly reminder: It's the law. What do you need to do?

As a reminder, on Sept. 17, 2020, California Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law SB 1159, concerning workers’ compensation, the coronavirus (COVID-19) and critical workers. This new law added sections (§3212.86-3212.88) of the CA Labor Code, codifying the Executive Order signed by Gov. Newsom on May 6, 2020, and expanding the “rebuttable presumption of compensability ” for certain employees who test positive for COVID-19.

California - West Hollywood amends minimum wage and leave ordinance

On May 16, 2022, the West Hollywood, California City Council approved amendments to the City’s minimum wage and leave ordinance that took effect Jan. 1, 2022.

California Supreme Court rules missed break payments are wages

In a recent case (Naranjo v. Spectrum Security Services Inc.), the California Supreme Court has ruled that the extra pay an employer must pay an employee if the employee works during their meal break constitutes wages for purposes of California’s final pay and itemized wage statement requirements.     This means that employers must report these payments on wage statements and must ensure that these payments are timely paid to employees. The failure to do so can lead to significant penalties.

California amends COVID-19 prevention rules for third time

The California Division of Occupational Safety and Health (Cal/OSHA) has revised emergency rules for protecting workers from COVID-19. The emergency rules became effective on May 6, 2022 and will remain in effect through December 31, 2022.

The City of Milpitas, California has announced that the minimum wage for the city will increase.
