Federal Compliance Update
The U.S. Department of Labor (DOL) has released a final rule to increase the minimum salary required to qualify for certain overtime exemptions. The final rule takes effect Jan. 1, 2020. The DOL estimates that the changes will make about 1.2 million workers newly eligible for overtime, unless employers increase their salaries.

DOL Opinion Letter FLSA 2019-2 confirms that an employee's time spent participating in an employer's volunteer program is not compensable so long as the program is optional, the employer does not control or direct the volunteer work, and an employee will not suffer adverse consequences for choosing not to participate.
