Boston adopts vaccination mandate for certain employers

Boston has announced that certain employers will be required to verify employees are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. Covered employers must check proof of vaccination and post a notice about the COVID-19 vaccine requirement.

California extends mask requirement

The California Department of Public Health (CDPH) has extended the requirement to wear face masks indoors until at least Feb. 15, 2022, regardless of COVID-19 vaccination status. Before the extension, the mask requirement was scheduled to end on Jan. 15, 2022.

West Hollywood requires paid and unpaid leave

West Hollywood, California has enacted an ordinance that requires employers to provide paid and unpaid leave benefits. Leave benefits become effective on January 1, 2022 for “hotel workers.” The effective date for all other employers is July 1, 2022.

Pennsylvania - Allegheny County announces paid sick leave effective date

Update: Allegheny County has posted its paid sick leave ordinance, noticeguidelines and FAQs to its website. Although the Ordinance required employers’ notice obligations to begin immediately once the law was approved, and for the other provisions of the ordinance to take effect 90 calendar days after the notice was posted, the County has changed the effective date of all parts of the ordinance to be December 15, 2021.

New York extends Paid Family Leave protections

New York has enacted legislation (Senate Bill 2928A) that expands the definition of “family member” under the New York Paid Family Leave (PFL) law to include siblings. The expanded definition takes effect on January 1, 2023.

New York City requires COVID-19 child vaccination leave

New York City has amended its Earned Safe and Sick Time Act (Int. 2448-2021) to allow employees to use paid sick time for COVID-19 child vaccinations. The amendments are retroactive to November 2, 2021, and are set to expire on December 31, 2022.

Illinois - Chicago adopts vaccination mandate for certain employers

Chicago has issued a public health order that requires certain employers to verify employees are fully vaccinated against COVID-19. If employees aren’t fully vaccinated, they must wear a mask when interacting with patrons and provide proof of a weekly negative COVID-19 test. The requirements take effect January 3, 2022.

Connecticut expanded FMLA takes effect January 1

Effective Jan. 1, 2022, Connecticut’s family and medical leave law will expand to cover all private sector employers and to include other changes. Additionally, the state’s new paid family leave program will provide wage-replacement benefits to employees who take leave for covered reasons.

Iowa Permits Employers to Provide Employee Wage Statements by Electronic Means

Previously, employers were required to mail wage statements, provide them at the place of employment, or provide employees with the means to view and print an electronic wage statement at the workplace. Per House Bill 2240, employers are now allowed to provide wage statements to employees via secure electronic transmission or other secure electronic means.

If the employee is unable to receive his or her wage statement electronically, the employee must notify the employer in writing at least one pay period in advance, and the employer must:
  • Send the statement to the employee by mail;
  • Provide the statement to the employee at the employee’s normal place of business during normal employment hours; or
  • Provide the employee access to view the employee earnings statement electronically and provide the employee free and unrestricted access to a printer to print the statement.

Effective: July 1, 2018
